Exclusive Interview

We talk with DT and DJ Sugarbear!

How did the two of you come together? We’ve known each other for a long time. We came together years ago. Back in the 90’s, we recorded an Album with “Afrodisiac”, one of our first projects together.
Your sound is a vibrant mix of dance and pop—how do you balance those two elements to create your signature style? We have a lot of influences ranging from Robert Glasper, Quincy Jones, Moon Child, Michael Franks, Sergio Mendez, Guru and DJ Premier, Al Di Meola, Teddy
Riley, Pharrell Williams, Bad Bunny, Tyla and others.
What's your creative process like when crafting a song that perfectly complements artists you work with? We create from many different perspectives. We love all types of music and our music reflects that. Over the years, we were always fortunate enough to meet and
work with many talented people.
Germany has a rich history of music. How do you feel you are contributing to and evolving that legacy? To be a part of any Musical Legacy, we’re very honored. The German Music
Scene in which we participate is very influenced from American and British Music (for
example R&B, Neo Soul, Hip Hop and Pop Music), Reggae, Afrobeat/Amapiano,
Reggaeton, Kizomba and World Music. We are happy to be able to make any
contribution to the history of music coming from Germany.
What do you do to prepare before hitting the stage and connecting with your audience?
We like to feel the crowd, the vibes and then it goes from there. We draw our
energy from the crowd. The energy that the crowd gives back is then amplified.
Who are some of your biggest musical influences, both within Germany and internationally? Gentleman (an internationally known German Reggae
Artist), Joy Denalane, DJ Tomekk, Samy Deluxe, Robert Glasper, Moon Child, Al
Jarreau, Earth, Wind and Fire, Roy Ayers, Jill Scott, Parliament Funkadelic.
If you could collaborate with any artist, living or dead? Quincy Jones, Guru and DJ Premier, Jill Scott, Tems and many more.
What challenges have you faced breaking into the music scene in Germany, and how did you overcome them? The challenge and fulfilment is succeeding to find open minds from the hearts of the German fans. Keep pushing our music forward and staying true to the music we
love.
What message do you hope your music conveys to listeners? We hope our music conveys positivity, hope and our love for what we do.
What can fans expect from you in the near future – new music, tours, or any other exciting projects? New music and videos that are in the works. Fans can expect us to release new music that shows our musical evolution into the future.
